Midjourney can rapidly explore architectural atmosphere, material combinations, facade rhythm, landscape relationships, and presentation direction. It does not perform structural engineering, code compliance, accessibility analysis, energy modeling, or dimensional coordination. Generated images should be labeled as concepts unless verified through a professional design process.

Define the Design Question

Avoid “design a beautiful museum.” State site, program, users, climate, cultural context, constraints, and the specific issue under exploration.

Concept study for a small coastal research center in a windy cool climate.
Explore a sheltered public courtyard, durable low-maintenance materials,
daylight to shared work areas, and a clear entrance from the east path.
This is atmosphere and massing exploration, not a construction rendering.

Prepare a Truth Layer

Collect authorized site photographs, survey diagrams, program areas, orientation, climate data, protected features, and governing constraints. Separate fixed facts from creative variables. Do not let a generated image silently relocate a boundary, remove an adjacent building, or invent a view.

Explore One Variable at a Time

Run studies for massing, threshold, courtyard proportion, material palette, daylight character, and landscape separately. Select promising principles before combining them. This produces design knowledge instead of a random gallery.

Use consistent camera points for comparison. Include human scale but review bodies, accessibility, and circulation critically.

Control References

Use your own sketches, diagrams, models, and licensed precedents. Midjourney's Image Prompts documentation explains how images can influence content, composition, and color; it does not guarantee dimensional fidelity.

Do not use another architect's project as a shortcut to copying a distinctive design.

Review Spatial Plausibility

Check entrances, floor heights, stairs, ramps, handrails, structure, drainage, egress, glazing, shadows, and material junctions. Generated spaces often contain seductive impossibilities. Label every unresolved condition.

Compare sun and climate claims with actual analysis tools. Validate accessibility and code through qualified professionals.

Transition to Professional Models

Once a direction is selected, rebuild it in CAD/BIM or a physical model with dimensions and constraints. Use verified geometry for client approvals, coordination, quantities, and construction documents. Midjourney imagery may continue as atmosphere reference, not the geometry source.

Communicate Honestly

Mark concepts clearly in presentations and public material. Avoid realistic imagery that implies permits, views, materials, landscaping, or environmental performance that has not been confirmed. Record model version, prompts, references, and edits.

Midjourney can broaden early design exploration, especially when teams need to compare visual principles quickly. Architectural responsibility begins where generation ends: measurement, coordination, public safety, and truthful communication.

Compare Concepts Against Requirements

Create a matrix with program fit, site response, circulation clarity, daylight intent, climate response, accessibility risk, material credibility, and unresolved engineering questions. An image may inspire a principle without satisfying the brief; record that distinction.

Use annotated overlays to mark verified site boundaries, true north, entrances, inaccessible level changes, speculative structure, and elements requiring professional analysis. Keep these annotations with client-facing presentations.

Avoid False Precision

Do not derive dimensions, quantities, energy use, cost, or construction feasibility from pixels. If the concept appears to contain solar panels, green roofs, or passive ventilation, describe them as visual ideas until a qualified analysis verifies performance.

When community or client consultation is involved, explain how images were produced and which decisions remain open. Realistic rendering can make an early option feel approved; clear labels protect an honest design process.

A Client Review Agenda

Open with the verified site and program constraints, then explain which visual variable each concept explores. Ask clients to respond to spatial priorities—welcome, privacy, daylight, connection, scale—rather than selecting a complete building from a generated image.

Record feedback as requirements or questions. “We like image B” becomes “the sheltered entrance and visible shared space support the desired welcome.” That principle can then be tested in the measured design model.

End every review with items to validate: area, structure, code, access, energy, landscape, cost, and community impact. Assign each to a qualified owner and set a date before the concept is shown as a developed proposal.
