Creating Editorial Illustrations with Midjourney

Editorial illustration should clarify or complicate an idea, not merely decorate a headline. Midjourney can accelerate concept exploration, but the editor and art director remain responsible for factual framing, originality, rights, and the relationship between image and article.

Extract the Visual Argument

Read the finished article and write one sentence describing its central tension. Identify literal subjects, abstract ideas, misleading clichés, sensitive identities, and facts the image must not contradict.

For an article about automated hiring, a useful tension might be “efficiency increases while accountability becomes harder to see.” That is a stronger visual brief than “robots and resumes.”

Generate Concepts in Different Modes

Explore at least three approaches:

• Literal: a credible scene related to the subject.
• Metaphorical: a visual relationship that expresses the argument.
• Systemic: diagram-like composition showing actors and consequences.

Write several thumbnail concepts before generating. Reject familiar AI clichés unless the article explicitly examines them.

Define the Layout

Specify page position, aspect ratio, focal point, crop safety, negative space, and typography zone. A newsletter thumbnail and a magazine opener require different detail and hierarchy.

Build an Original Visual Language

Describe materials, palette, geometry, contrast, and finish. Use authorized references for composition or mood and identify their role. Do not ask for the style of a living artist or reproduce a publication's recognizable campaign.

Check Factual and Ethical Framing

Do not depict a synthetic event as documentary evidence. Avoid invented quotations, logos, interfaces, or people who could be mistaken for real participants. Review whether metaphor unfairly stigmatizes a group or turns a complex issue into a false binary.

For conflict, crime, health, politics, and vulnerable communities, use heightened editorial and legal review.

Refine and Produce

Choose concepts at thumbnail size, then inspect full-resolution anatomy, repeated objects, pseudo-text, and unintended symbols. Place the image with the real headline and mobile crop. Add approved typography, labels, and exact color in design software.

Write accurate alt text that communicates the relevant concept without interpreting beyond the image. Preserve model version, prompt, references, edits, rights, and disclosure information.

The best editorial illustration earns its place by helping the reader see the argument. Midjourney supplies options; editorial judgment determines which image is true to the story and responsible to publish.

Build a Concept Review Table

Score each candidate on relevance to the argument, originality, immediate readability, layout fit, factual risk, representation, and production effort. Require a one-sentence rationale. This prevents the most visually dramatic image from winning when it supports the wrong interpretation.

Test the image without the headline, then with it. If the concept communicates an unrelated story alone or becomes redundant with the title, refine the relationship. Strong editorial art often creates a useful second layer rather than illustrating the headline literally.

Prepare Publication Metadata

Record credit language, generation and edit method, rights status, prompt and reference archive, alt text, caption, and any disclosure. A caption should clarify factual context without pretending the depicted scene occurred. Set a review date if the image contains a current product interface, officeholder, map, or other detail that can become stale.

Archive rejected concepts that failed for ethical or factual reasons so they are not regenerated for a later edition without context.
