A style reference is useful when it carries a defined visual system across different subjects. It is less useful when it becomes a shortcut for copying a single image or imitating a named artist. Professional art direction translates references into observable properties—palette, contrast, texture, lighting, geometry, and visual density—then tests whether those properties survive new content.
Midjourney version behavior changes. Confirm the active model in the official version guide and consult current parameter documentation before standardizing a syntax or weight.
Define the Visual Language in Words
Before selecting references, create a style specification:
- color palette and saturation range;
- light direction, softness, and contrast;
- shape language: geometric, organic, angular, or rounded;
- material and surface treatment;
- depth, perspective, and lens character;
- visual density and negative space;
- emotional register;
- prohibited motifs and brand conflicts.
For example: “restrained mineral palette, soft directional daylight, tactile paper and ceramic surfaces, simple geometric staging, generous negative space, quiet editorial mood, no glossy neon or futuristic interface motifs.”
This description remains usable even if a reference file or model version changes.
Curate a Small Reference Set
Choose a few images you own or are permitted to use. Each should contribute a clear property. Avoid a large mood board with contradictory lighting, eras, and color systems. Annotate the role of every reference:
| Reference | Intended influence | Ignore |
|---|---|---|
| A | muted palette and soft contrast | subject identity |
| B | paper texture and simple geometry | exact layout |
| C | daylight direction | depicted product |
Do not use private client work or copyrighted assets without authorization. If the goal can be described directly, use words instead of relying on an opaque imitation request.
Create a Neutral Test Matrix
Test the style against several unrelated subjects: a portrait, a product, an interior, an abstract editorial concept, and a wide landscape. Keep aspect ratio and core prompt structure stable. A genuine system should create family resemblance without making every image compositionally identical.
Evaluate palette, light, surface, depth, and energy separately. If the reference unintentionally transfers a recurring object or composition, revise the reference set or state the subject and layout more explicitly.
Separate Content From Style
Use a prompt architecture with distinct clauses:
Content: a small research team examining printed maps and a laptop.
Composition: wide eye-level frame, group on the right, open wall on the left.
Visual system: muted mineral palette, soft directional daylight,
tactile matte surfaces, restrained editorial realism.
Constraints: contemporary setting, no visible logos, no embedded text.
This separation makes iteration diagnosable. If the pose is wrong, change content or composition. If the output is too glossy, change the visual system—not all sections at once.
Control Strength Through Testing
Reference influence and stylization controls can interact with prompt text and model version. Build a small grid that varies one setting while keeping everything else fixed. Label the results and choose a range rather than a single magic value.
Retest after a model update. A parameter combination calibrated on an earlier model may produce different contrast, detail, or prompt adherence on V8.2.
Build a Team Style Kit
Store the written specification, approved references, usage rights, tested prompts, selected settings, positive and negative examples, and final production files. Include a change log and owner. A teammate should be able to reproduce the direction without reverse-engineering a screenshot from chat history.
Document exceptions. A product-detail image may need higher material realism than an editorial illustration while keeping the same palette and spacing principles.
Review for Coherence and Originality
Place outputs together as a campaign, not one at a time. Check whether color, contrast, framing, and subject treatment feel related. Also check that the system permits enough variation to avoid visual monotony.
Review for accidental logos, recognizable intellectual property, inappropriate stereotypes, and excessive similarity to a source reference. Final typography and exact brand marks should be applied in controlled design software.
A durable Midjourney style is not a mysterious code. It is a documented set of visual decisions, supported by authorized references and tested across the range of content the brand actually needs.
