Midjourney can generate strong product-visual concepts, campaign directions, and pre-production references. It should not be treated as a substitute for truthful product photography when the image must prove exact dimensions, included accessories, packaging text, regulated claims, or physical performance.
Midjourney's default model changes over time. As of August 2026, the official model version documentation lists V8.2 as the current default. Confirm the selected version before starting a repeatable campaign.
Define the Commercial Job
Start with placement and purpose: ecommerce listing, landing-page hero, social campaign, packaging concept, or internal art direction. Record aspect ratio, crop variants, negative-space needs, background restrictions, and required product fidelity.
Create three accuracy classes:
- Conceptual: explores mood, setting, and composition; product identity may be approximate.
- Brand-directional: should preserve palette, materials, and recognizable form but remains a concept.
- Product-evidentiary: must accurately represent the item sold. Use controlled photography or a verified 3D pipeline, not unreviewed generation.
This classification prevents a beautiful concept from being published as misleading evidence.
Build a Product Truth Sheet
Before prompting, document the non-negotiable characteristics: silhouette, dimensions, materials, finish, color, openings, buttons, logo placement, package contents, and features that must not appear. Photograph the product from several neutral angles if authorized.
Separate factual constraints from creative variables. The bottle geometry may be fixed while surface, lighting, props, and camera angle remain open to exploration.
Establish Composition First
Write the first prompt around subject, framing, and use:
Minimal studio concept for a compact matte-black desktop speaker,
three-quarter front view, product occupying the right 45 percent of frame,
eye-level camera, generous negative space on the left for headline,
light warm-gray seamless background, soft grounded shadow,
clean commercial photography, no text, no hands, no extra controls
Generate several composition families before adding elaborate styling. A strong product page needs a clear silhouette, predictable crop, and space for interface elements. Decorative detail cannot repair a layout that competes with the headline or call to action.
Design the Light
Describe light by function: large soft key from upper left, narrow rim that separates a dark edge, controlled reflection across brushed metal, or diffused top light that reveals paper texture. State contrast level and shadow behavior.
Material credibility depends on light. Glass needs readable edges and believable refraction; metal needs controlled gradients; fabric needs directional texture. If the material reads incorrectly, simplify the set and adjust one light variable at a time.
Use References With Clear Roles
Choose authorized references for product form, layout, palette, or visual direction and state which property each should influence. Do not combine unrelated reference images and expect stable fidelity. Record model version, prompt, aspect ratio, reference files, and important settings for every selected concept.
Reference mechanisms and parameter behavior can change between versions, so use Midjourney's current documentation rather than copying an old parameter recipe.
Iterate Through Controlled Stages
Use four passes:
- Silhouette and framing: select a composition that works in the final placement.
- Material and lighting: make surfaces physically plausible.
- Environment and props: support product positioning without clutter.
- Brand fit: refine palette, energy, and campaign consistency.
Change one major variable per iteration. Keep a contact sheet and notes explaining why a direction was accepted or rejected. This converts browsing into an art-direction process.
Perform a Product Accuracy Review
Compare the selected output against the truth sheet. Inspect port count, control placement, reflections, seams, labels, accessories, proportions, and shadows. View at full resolution and in the actual crop. Look for accidental trademarks, pseudo-text, duplicated props, implausible contact points, and misleading scale.
Do not use a generated label as final packaging. Add approved logos and typography in a conventional design tool, where spelling, color values, clear space, legal marks, and localization can be controlled.
Plan the Final Production Route
Decide whether the output is a mood board, a retouching component, a background plate, or a reference for a photographer or 3D artist. Preserve provenance and follow platform, agency, retailer, and jurisdictional rules for AI-generated commercial media. Obtain legal review for people, trademarks, copyrighted assets, and regulated product categories.
Midjourney is strongest here as a rapid visual-development system. Commercial trust still depends on a human art director who knows which details may be imagined and which must remain demonstrably true.
